Time Out is passionate about training their befrienders to assist young people at risk.
All befrienders complete an initial training program that is facilitated by both internal and external facilitators.See the next training schedule here.
As well as the training, all befrienders must complete a “shadow shift” before becoming a befriender. A “shadow shift” involves working in the Time
Out House with a young person, but being accompanied and mentored by two experienced befrienders. All participants of the training must be willing
to volunteer their time on a weekend at the Time Out House to be eligible to complete the training.
As well as the initial training program, we are committed to ongoing personal development for our befrienders, and meet on the first Monday of each month to refresh our skills, listen to guest speakers or debrief about our work in the Time Out House. We also hold social gatherings for our befrienders so we can catch up and socialize with each other, these night have included, bowling nights, movie nights, BBQs (in summer.)
Befrienders are also encouraged to speak with us about bringing their pets into The Time Out House as we know our clients love our Furfrienders. Our befrienders bring great skills into the house like cooking, knitting, beauty therapy and movie watching and our ages range between 18-70. We love that our befrienders are a diverse bunch of people willing to give 8-14 hours each month to support our young please in need.
Befriender training is charged at a fee of $50pp or for concession holders $25pp. This nominal fee is to cover administration and catering costs, as we are funded through community donations we appreciate your support. Should there be any concerns about this fee please give us a call to discuss.
